Formed in 1989, the Western Suburbs Music Society, performing as the Laurie Young Concert Band, is a ‘not for profit’ community band consisting of 35 members. The band’s membership is comprised of a cross section of the community, ranging from high school students to retirees, including a number of music teachers and former Defence Force musicians.
The Band performs a wide range of music ranging from traditional marches to big band jazz, movie themes, show tunes and classical concert band pieces, tailoring selections to suit the audience and the occasion. The band is also well known for its expertise in parade performances and ceremonial occasions.
Rehearsals are held on Sunday evenings at the Milne Bay Memorial Drill Hall, Kittyhawk Drive, Chermside.
The Director of Music, Major Laurie Young, retired from the Australian Army as Officer Commanding / Music Director of the First Military District Band, Brisbane. Laurie is well known in Brisbane and served 22 years in the Regular Army as a musician and conductor. Laurie’s wealth of experience provides the necessary musical guidance for a successful team.
